SCHOOL ATTENDANCE DOWN

BAD WEATHER AT KAPONGA REPORT TO COMMITTEE (From Our Own Correspondent) Unfavourable weather interfered with the average attendance last month, according to the report of the headmaster (Mr A. T. Honore) at a meeting of the Kaponga School Committee on Monday. The chairman, Mr :O. H. Brewer, presided, and there were present Messrs. C-. N. Gordge, H. C. Norgate and the headmaster, Mr A. T. Honore. The secretary was granted leave of absence owing to indisposition. Continuing his report, the headmaster stated that the roll number stood at 97, tho average attendance for the month of October being 91.3. The health of the children was generally good. The windows in the infant room had been rehung, hut there still remained a number, in the senior room requiring attention. The plumbing was also deficient in places, and in very wet weather water found its way down the outer Avails. Cricket matches had been played with Mangatoki, Kaponga losing the first and winning the second. Seasonal work was continued in the school garden and the children, especially the middle division, were very enthusiastic. Twenty young koWhai trees had been added to the native trees area and also three karakas, the latter being donated by June Thurston. Air R. Syme, agricultural officer, had visited the school towards the end of last month. Regarding the children’s clubs, Mr Honore reported that there were four competitors in tho gardening section and one in tho root-growing and seven in the calf-rearing section. A letter was received from the Kaponga Town Board drawing attention to rain-water piping at the school being fed into tho board’s sewers. The letter pointed out that this action was against the by-laws and asked that it be rectified at an early date. The matter was referred to the Taranaki Education Board for action. It was decided to bring the matter of the deficiency of the plumbing under the notice of the board.

The visiting committee for October, Messrs. Brewer and Taylfortli, reported the grounds in excellent order. Messrs. Gordge and Norgate were appointed. the November visiting committee.

Mr Taylforth reported that there were 36 pupils on the Kaponga roll of the dental clinic. All Kaponga children had been treated, the nurse now giving attention to back work.
