BRITAIN’S SUCCESS
German Praise of Leadership in the Work at Geneva HINT OF FUTURE PACT DIPLOMATIC LEAD GIVEN (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright). LONDON, Nov. 6.
The “Allgemeino Zeitung” in an article on collective security says that after a month’s war in Abyssinia, France has lost the League leadership and Britain has assumed it, says the Berlin correspondent of “The Times.” “France aroused suspicions in small countries and lingland understood how to secure respect as the protector of the small nations and coloured races,” the paper adds. “The world marvels at the methodical thoroughness, energy and success of British authority. The naval agreement between Kngland and Germany eliminated the North Sea as a danger zone, which, like the British fi&t, has shifted to the Mediterranean.
“The danger of France declaring herself neutral in the event of a clash between England and Italy is now dispelled. England has the French Mediterranean ports at her disposal as bases and need not worry about the possible loss of Malta. Etngland in four weeks has removed the danger of a Latin Mediterranean alliance disturbing Eiuropean equilibrium. Her diplomatists have worked as hard as the Italian, navvies at Adigrat, but did not sweat over it. Moreover, England can credit herself with the restoration of the Greek monarchy. “The Mediterranean organisation is in firm hands. Seldom has a great political aim been so cheaply achieved. It has all been done in the name of collectivism, which England means sincerely, but an important section of German opinion considers that if and when Italy is brought to book it will be by a short, sharp armed clash with Britain and not by a long-distance blockade under the League banner. Great Britain is conscious of this and will abandon collectivism in favour of an Anglo-German agreement of much wider scope than the naval agreement.”
