Pleasure was expressed by Mr R. J. Watt, on behalf of the electors of Kakaramea last night, that Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., had recovered from his illness sufficiently to enable him to continue his campaign. Mr Edmund Simeon Barton, whose death has occurred at Whangarei, at one time farmed in the Tariki district. He was born at Reading, England, in 1854, and was the son of the late Professor C. H. Barton. He went with his parents to Australia at an early age, but he left his home at Adelaide when only 14 and was employed on a cattle run in the Northern Territory for some years. Arriving in New Zealand over 50 years ago he was one of the original settlers when the Ballance Block, Wellington, was taken up. After his retirement Mr Barton spent considerable time at Whangarei, usually spending the winter in the South Sea Islands. ITe was not married.
The death has occurred at Waverley of Mrs Naomi Johnston, one of the district’s pioneer settlers. Deceased had been ailing for some time and had been an inmate of the Wanganui Hospital. Mrs Johnston was born in Billston, South Staffordshire,, England, in 1855, and came to New Zealand in the sailing ship James Niekle Fleming, landing in Wanganui in IBGS. At the age of 20 Mrs Johnston was married to the late Robert Johnston, who predeceased her in 1895. For the last 58 years Mrs Johnston had. lived in Waverley, where her family Mesdames Newman (Mauriceville), Whittington (Christchurch), P. Young (Auckland), Cooke (Waverley) and Messrs Albert Johnston (Whakatane), John Johnston (Okoia) and S. Johnston (Waverley)— were born.
