TAIPOROHENUI INSTITUTE

SECOND BIRTHDAY SOCIAL. ENTERTAINING PROGRAMME. Members of many outside institutes were present at the Taiporohenui meeting house last night for the second birthday social of the Taiporohenui Maori Women’s Institute. Proceedings took the form of a musical programme, followed by supper, at which a birthday cake was cut with due ceremony, aud a dance. There was a large attendance and amongst those present were the Mayor and Mayoress of Hawera, Dir and Mrs J. E. Campbell and representatives of the Taranaki Federation and the Te Roti, Turuturu, Turitownship, Okaiawa Maori, Matariki and Ohawe Institutes. A welcome was extended by Mrs S. IPanenui, president of the Taiporohenui Institute, while greetings were expressed by the representatives ot visiting institutes. During the evening bouquets were presented to Mrs Panenui by Mrs McAsey, on behalf of the Taranaki Federation and by Miss K. Reid, on behalf of members of the Taiporohenui Institute. Bouquets were also presented to Mrs J. E. Campbell by Miss S. Epai and to Mrs Gpvenor, secretary of the institute, by Mrs M. R. Jones.

A feature of the gathering was a comprehensive system of decorations, which gave evidence of much work in the arrangement of streamers and ferns.

Prominent at supper was a twotiered birthday cake with two candlesThe ingredients were donated by a member, while the cake was made and iced by Mrs W. Adams.. The candles were lit by the oldest member, Mrs Valentine and blown out by the youngest member, Miss K. Reid, after which Mrs Panenui presided at the cutting ceremony. Several of the numbers in the musical programme were rendered by the institute members, who entertained with the institute song, sung first in English and then in Maori, a double snort poi, a song, “Huimai,” an action song, “E Pari Ra,” a canoe poi, a single long poi, an action song and haka “Paki Pakia” and a Maori song of farewell. Each of these was well received as also were the following items: (Song, Miss K. Reid; sailor’s hornpipe and tap dance, Miss J. McAsey; exhibition of double long poi, Norma Govenor; vocal duet, Misses M. Govenor and S. Epai; sketch, Mesdames Fowler and 'Hurley; vocal duet, Mr and Mrs R. S. Allwright. The accompaniments were played by the Taiporohenui Maori Orchestra, Mrs \V. Snowsill, Miss M.
