SWORD SMUGGLED OUT
ROBBERY AT THE TOWER. DISCOVERY DURING INVENTORY LONDON, Sept. 23. Somewhere an ambitious souvenir hunter is congratulating himself on having outwitted the watchful Yeoman of the Guard at the Tower of London even more completely than did that famous Irish adventurer, Colonel Blood, 264 years ago. Colonel Blood stole the Crown jewels; but he was promptly captured. The souvenir hunter has removed from the Tower one of its old swords—about 3ft in length—and after a fortnight he remains, with his "booty, undiscovered. The sword was missed last week when an inventory was being taken of the contents of the Armoury. There are nearly 6000 historic exhibits in the Tower collection, and many date back to the Middle Ages. Tens of thousands of people see the collection every year, for the Armoury (nowhere near the Crown jewels) is open every day except Sunday. Never before, however, has an exhibit been stolen. An official of the Tower told a reporter: “There seems no doubt that whoever smuggled the sword oulf- of the Tower must have come with a party of visitors and secreted it under a raincoat or perhaps down the leg of his trousers.” It is stated that the value of the swrrj. is not considerable, but the authorities are perturbed by the fact that it has been found possible ta steal from the Tower.
