TARANAKI SWIMMING

TWO CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS HAWERA AND NEW PLYMOUTH PREPARATIONS FOR SEASON The Taranaki swimming championships in all grades will this season be held at tw r o carnivals, one at Hawera and the other at New Plymouth on dates to be decided. A decision to this effect was made at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Swimming Centre at New Plymouth on Monday. The new rule means that, in place of the custom of the previous two years of holding one championship meeting for the senior titles and the other for the junior and intermediate events, championship events for all grades will be divided between the two carnivals. The reason actuating the centre in its decision was the fact that the junior carnivals held separately have been financial failures.

I One of the reasons for the holding | of the junior and intermediate chami pionships separately from the .senior | was to discover suitable Taranaki enj trants for the junior national swim- | ming championships held in January of 3 each year. Holding the championships I so early in the season, and necessarily ] during the school holidays, has had an I effect both on the form of the comI petitors and on the attendance of the j public. Although nothing definite was | done, it is probable the selector will j lbe empowered by the centre to select j any suitable swimmers for the national I junior championships on the form I shown at club carnivals. J The balance-sheet showed a credit ! balance of more than £23. The election of officers resulted: j President, Mr F. J. Eggleton; vicepresidents, Messrs W. A. Spragg and W. H. Moves, and presidents of affiliated clubs; chairman of executive, Mr Eggleton; secretary, Mr J. F. Devine; 3v. J. Duffin; local officer, Mr G. F. Bertrand; starter, Mr Eggleton; educational officer, Mr A. B. |. Barns; local sub-officers, Messrs R. I Crossman (Inglewood), G. Beaven (Hawera), R. Gayton (New Plymouth), W. J. Aitken (Stratford), W. A. MoorI head (Fitzroy), A. W. Sims (East End), and L. Haycock (Eltham); delegate to the New Zealand Council, Mr C. R. Riordan; polo selectors, Messrs AV. Ivivell and S. Bennett; polo referees, Messrs M. Smale (New Plymouth), W. J. Claringbold (Havfera), AY. Twomey (Fitzroy), S. Bennett (New Plymouth),

W. Ivivell (Inglewood), €. Plumtree (Fitzroy), W. J. Aitken (Stratford); executive committee, Messrs A. Ryan (Hawera), R. Crossman (Inglewood), R. ' Gayton (New Plymouth), A. Sims (East End), W. Moorhead (Fitzroy), G. F. Bertrand (New Plymouth Boys’ High School), V. Henderson (Stratford), Dr. D. H. Saunders (Eltham), and Miss J. Main (New Plymouth Y.W.C.A.); handicapper for centre carnivals, Mr R. Clayton. Taranaki diving judges were appointed as follow: Messrs A. H. Blennerliasset, D. Sykes, W. Ivivell, L. S. Poison, V. ,T. Henderson. The names of the nominees will be forwarded to the New Zealand Council for inclusion on the panel of- the New Zealand diving championship judges. The appointment of timekeepers was held over. Those present w r ere Messrs F. J. Eggleton (Boys’ High School), chairman, A\ r . Moorhead (Fitzroy), M. Good, A. J. Ryan (Hawera), A. AY. .Sims (East End), E. Ivivell, R. Crossman (Inglewood), T. J. Haughton, V. J. Henderson (Stratford), R. H. Perkins (Old Boys), M. Kcbble, Dr. D. H. Saunders (Eltham), Miss D. Bates and Miss J. Main, Mr J. F. Devine (secretary).

Advice w r as received that the proposed tour of New Zealand by an Australian water polo team had been postponed from before Christmas till March. The question of control of the tour is being considered by the New Zealand Council. If the council does not control the tour, the Auckland centre or the AA'aitemata club may control it.

It was decided to refer to the incoming executive the question of reducing fees for polo teams entering cup competitions to 2s fid. The decision followed a remit suggesting the change from the Fitzroy club, which considered that the present fees w r ere too high. Delegates discussed the question, which it was stated, presented some difficulties owing to the legality or otherwise of tampering with rules laid down for the running of the competitions by the New Plymouth club, which originally controlled them.
