Jackson has been elected chairman of the Wanganui Hospital iioarc and Air Richmond c-liairman of the Taranaki board. * * *► * It is announced with much Jubilation that Wahanui has given freely all his land required for the North Island Trunk Railway. He may well do so! There are plenty of Europeans w-ho w T ould be only too glad to get a railway made by the Government through their land on such terms. It will pay 'Wahanui well to give the land for the sake of the enormously enhanced value which will be given to the rest of his property. $ $ ? $ $ At Sir Julius Vogel’s meeting in Christchurch recently the following question was asked: “Seeing that the sale of alcoholic liquor is the cause of so much crime, is it the opinion of Sir Julius that the sale of such drinks should he prohibited?” The Treasurer replied: ‘‘l cannot help thinking that w*ine and spirits were given to the' ivorld to be 1 used in moderation, and it is very hard that those who are ready to so use them should have, for the sake of giving example, to deny themselves. . . .”
The Marquis of Salisbury, addressing a meeting at Lambeth, referred to the question of reciprocal tariffs, and pronounced in favour of reprisals against those countries which refused reciprocal tariff, and further urged that duties now levied should be reduced in favour of goods imported from British colonies.
The Taranaki County Council has decided to hand over the dog tax to the several road boards, provided they agree to collect the tax efficiently. The council will supply the collars at a price.
