Mr J. A. Watson, president of the National Roads and Motorists’ Association of New South. Wales, is visiting Wellington.

Mr W. A. Sheat, president of the South Taranaki executive of the Farmers’ Union, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Professor W. A. Sewell, of the Auckland. University College, arrived in New Plymouth on Friday to spend some weeks.

The Rev. F. G. Parry, of Hamilton, who has been appointed church extension organiser of the Baptist Union, will take up his duties at Greymouth in January. Professor C. R. Knight, professor of architecture at Auckland University College, has been granted a Carnegie Corporation fellowship to enable him to visit the United States and Europe. A London cable reports the death of Mr Stuart Bevan, K.C., a 5 member of the House of Commons. Mr Bevan was Conservative member for Holborn since 1928. .He. was- recorder of Bristol: since 1932 and a Bencher of the Inner Temple. ■ - • . The death has occurred of Sir John Pybus, M.P., formerly Minister of Transport, at the age Of 55, says a London cable. Sir John. Pybus was connected with a number of firms'. He was chairman of the Phoenix Assurance Co., Ltd., and was a director of the Times Publishing Co. During a long political career he was Minister of Transport and served on numerous Parliamentary committees.

The death has occurred in London of Mrs Edward Doclcrill, a former Mayoress of New Plymouth. Mrs Dockrill was prominently identified with social .and church activities at New Plymouth for a lengthy period. She left for England some time after the death of her husband, and for the past eight years has lived with her son, Dr. John Dockrill. One of the oldest residents of New Plymouth in the person of Mr Richard Cock, celebrated his 84tli birthday on Friday. He was the recipient of scores of congratulatory telegrams, including messages from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, the Minister of Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, and the Hon. James MieLeod. The messages also included a cable from Dr. J. A. Gilruth, iMelbourne. Mr B. Watts, wno left this morning for Whakatnne, where he has accepted a position, was on Friday evening farewelled by members of the St. John’s 'Prdsbyteriain Church Bible Classes. A presentation of a set of brushes was made to Mr "Watts by Mr J. McKee, who referred to the valuable assistance Mr Watts had given to the classes and the church. The Rev. A. G. Irvine, Miss D. Coi*rigan and Mr A. Macßae also voiced their appreciation. There was a large and representative attendance yesterday at the funeral of Mrs Ida Stampa, Normanby Road, Okaiawa, who died at Hawera on Saturday. The Rev. •K. Watson, Normanby, conducted the service at the house and also officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were all past office bearers of the Okaiawa Oddfellows’ Lodge:—Messrs J. O. Barclay, L. Newman, E. Drake, J. E. Doyle, A. H. Ma gin ley and O. Crawford .

A former Mayor of Inglewood, Mr J. A. Winfield, died at New Plymouth, on Saturday at the age of 69 years. Mr Winfield was born at Melton Mowbray, England, and when 20 years of age he went to Australia. He returned to England, but later made the voyage to New Zealand and settled in Taranaki. He farmed on the Kent Road for several years and then started business as a cabinet-maker at Inglewood. Some years later ho went into a grocery business which he conducted until his death. Mr Winfield was prominent in public affairs and was a member of the Inglewood Borough Council for many years. lie was twice Mayor and was a member of the Taranaki Hospital Board for that time. He was prominent as a Freemason and was associated with several sporting bodies, notably the Inglewood Golf dub. He is survived by Mrs Winfield and four children, Mrs L, Judd, Inglewood, and Messrs Dennis Winfield (Turua), Cyril Winfield (Inglewood) and Brian Winfield (Fiji). Mrs H. S. McWilliam, of Hawera, is a niece.
