EXTRACTS FROM “HAWERA STAR” SEPTEMBER! 12, 1885. At the election for three members of the Hawera Borough Council, Messrs. A. H. Duff, H. G. Pitcher and J. Winks were elected. *****
It is reported that the Tawhiti flour mill will shortly be offered for sale by auction. The turbine water power there would supply Hawera borough with water all the year round, if it could be acquired in any way by the council. *****
The Egmont football team returned this afternoon from their Wellington trip looking well after their stay in the Empire city. The team have well upheld the honour of the district, for they managed to easily defeat Hawke’s Bay, and, but for a piece of bad luck at a crisis of the match, would at any rate have drawn with Wellington. *****
Surprise and regret is expressed at the result of the case against the Hawera Road Board. The regret is on account of the. loss of the ratepayers’ money; surprise is due to the fact that the board seemed confident of winning the case. There are many who attribute the verdict more to the eloquent and forcible address made by plainitff’s counsel to the jury than to the facts brought out in evidence. Those who attach so much weight to the eloquence of the plaintiff’s counsel probably did not hear and weigh all the evidence brought forward. It is generally conceded that Mr Hutchison conducted his case with, great ability and good judgment. * * * * *
The first section of th© WellingtonManawatu railway, from Wellington to Parramatta, a distance of 16 miles, will be opened on September 21.
