Soloist Wins the Okehu Hurdles From Esteem PUTIKI TO GAY BOY (Special to “Star"-;—From “Childers.”) WANGANUI, To-day. The weather was fine but dull for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting, there being a fair attendance. The track was soft. Results: — MAIDEN RACE. Of £SO. Six furlongs. 3 Flitacre, 8.5 (R. Horne) 1 2 Entail, 7.12 (G. Humphries) —2 12 Begorrah, 7.12 (J. Leach) ...... 3 Also started: Middle 8.5, Entheos 8.5, Ringapoto 8.5, Mowgli 8.5, Mademoiselle Quex 8.5, The Image 8.5, Conversion 7.12, Mesurina- 7.12, Prevail 7.12, Going Gay 7.12, Frugal 7.12, Happy Landing 7.12, Bumble 7.12, Callisto 7.12, Garter Red 7.12, Hunting Scene 7.12. Won by a length and a half; a neck. Time, 1.15 3-5. Nicely placed throughout, Flitacre ■won well. Prevail was slow away. The first to break the line was Entheos from Going Gay, Mowgli and Flitacre. Racing across the top, Mowgli joined Entheos and lead from Flitacre, Going Gay and The Image.' Turning into the straight Flitacre and Entheos were on terms from Going Gay, Entail and Mowgli. In the run home Elitaere drewaway and won by two lengths from the fast finishing Entail, who cut Begorrah out of second money by a neck just ahead of Going Gay. Then came The Image, Happy Landing, Entheos and Mowgli. The winner scored convincingly, but Entail will do- better- on.' a roomier track. Begorrah is a likely improver, so is Happy Landing, who finished fast. The favourite, Going Gay, had every chance. OKEHU HURDLES. Of £llO. One mile and 4£ furlongs. 4 Soloist, 9.5 (I. Tucker) 1 2 Esteem, 11.0 (W. Bowden) —2 5 Kaola, 9.2 (C. Thomson) 3 Also started: Euaform 10.3, Gold Cure 9.12, Lady Wessex 9.0, Bay Sand 9.0. Won by a length and a half; three lengths. Time, 2.49 3-5. Giving a brilliant exhibition of jumping, ‘ Soloist led from start to finish to win with great ease. -Soloist was first away from Bay Sand and Gold Cure, a fast pace being set. Passing the) stand for the first time Soloist and Bay -Sand were together ahead of Gold Cure, Esteem and Kaola. Going out of the straight Ruaform ran up fast on the outer to join Soloist entering the back stretch ahead of Esteem and Kaola. Outjumping Ruaform, Soloist drew away and won pulling up by a length from Esteem, with Kaola three lengths further back. Gold Cure was fourth with Ruaform next. Lady Wessex ran off at the third fence. Soloist won most impressively and looks a smart hurdler in the making. -Esteem ran a solid .race, but the winner was too good. Kaola finished well, but Ruaform. jumped poorly throughout. Bay Sand stopped quickly.

Won by a length each way. Time, 1.31 3*5,

Gay Boy was always handily placed and won -well from a rank outsider in Lady Eka. From a good start, Lady Eka, began smartest and. led out of the straight from Bompalong, Gay Boy and Sporting Song, this still being the order down the back, with Bust and Ingenuity at the tail of the tield. Crossing the top there was still little change in the order, except that Sporting Song and Midacre had improved their positions. Lady Eka w T as just ahead of Gay Boy, Sporting Song and Midacre into the straight, where Gay Boy took command at the distance to beat Lady Eka by a length, with Blue Tiger a similar distance back. Sporting Song was fourth, followed by Bompalong, Silver Brier and Ingenuity. The winner was always going well and lie is a much improved horse. Lady Eka ran a great race for her first effort over the distance. She paid double figures for second. Blue Tiger finished strongly, but the favourite, Silver Brier, disappointed.
