FIRST HOSPITAL SHIP

RELICS OF THE MAHENO. BELL AND PLATE PRESENTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. An interesting ceremony took place in the board room of the Union Steam Ship Company when tlie bell and name plate of the old steamer Maheno were handed over by the company to the Wellington War Memorial and Carillon Society. In presenting the relies, Mr C. G. White said it was a fitting thing that such a ship should be so well remembered. She was the first hospital ship te leave New Zealand, and those who sailed aboard her must have many affectionate memories of the old ship. Lieutenant-Colonel Cowles, chairman of the carillon society, received the bell and plate. He said the nursing service was very enthusiastic and thankfiil at the generosity of the company “as must be all medical officers who served in the ship and all those she carried in safety through fthe dangerous waters near Gallipoli and ot the English Channel.”
