GERMAN POWER
NO LONGER DEFENCELESS
“Most Precious and Proudest Property is Army” HITLER’S PROCLAMATION OPENING OF NAZI CONGRESS /United Frees Aaem-latlon —By Eectrlo Telegraph Copyright). Received 1 p.m. to-day. NUREMBERG, Sept. 11. Opening the annual Nazi Congress, • Herr Wagner read President Hitler’s proclamation, in which he said: “Germany is no longer the world’s defenceless plaything. Our most precious and proudest property is our army. We shall retain our power and shall strike down, every opj>o.sition directly it shows itself. We do not intend to fight the Christian religion, but will not tolerate a continuance of the political activities of different confessions under any disguise. We shall strengthen the German Reich through the army and make it more safe,” A thousand Brown Shirts cheered themselves hoarse. These remarks followed with a panegyric on the new Germany, especially the army. “It is not the. army’s duty to conquer foreign, lands,” continued the speech. Wherever war breaks out Moscow has a halid in it. Germany is determined never to let the victory she won over Bolshevism be taken from her and never to let the Jewish agents of a foreign power regain their influence in German affairs. THOUSANDS LINE STREETS. Church bells pealed and artillery boomed salutes when Hen* Hitler arrived for the Congress. Tens of thousands lined the streets, cheering wildly as he passed standing in an open car. Contrasting with earlier congresses, uniformed regular soldiers were more prominent, than Brown Shirts as the celebrations are intended to symbolise the introduction of conscription and repossession of military independence. Herr Hitler is personally responsible for giving a military twist to the congress. Stress will be laid on the united frontj .alleged to exist between tlie Nazis and the Reichswehr. Herr Hitler, acknowledging the gift of a replica of the Sword of Charlemagne, declared : “The gift symbolises the power of the Reich and will always remind me of the first year of German liberty to rearm. This is the greatest festival in Nazi history.” Herr Hitler reviewed the Reichswehr, which displayed famous wartime flags. Eighty thousand Storm Troopers are attending the congress, in addition to 50.000 Labour Service Corps and 10,000 party officials. Most of the visitors ai-e living in tents. Many marched hundreds of miles carrying their own supplies and bedding. < * . ' On© of the guests of honour is the Hen. Unity Mitford, Lord Redesdale’s daughter, who supports Herr Streicher’s anti-Semitism. Herr Dietrich, chief of the Nazi Press bureau, when h© received journalists stated that Germany’s foreign policy sought to replace, an endless . succession of ineffectual League conferences by direct negotiation, which was fruitful of direct results, for instance, the Anglo-German Navy Treaty. Germany opposed military alliances, sought to localise conflicts, and favoured pacts of non-aggression.
