When the Legislative Council met. yesterday sympathy was expressed with Sir Francis Bell in the death of Lady Bell. Mr T. S. Lynch, of the Hawera Courthouse staff, has been appointed inspector of factories at Hawera. Canterbury University College nominees for Rhodes scholarships are Messrs' Alan Dudley Benham and Minden Vaughan Blake, reports the Press Association.

Mr A. E. Slab in, a director of Levin and Co., Wellington, has been elected president of the New Zealand Wooljrokers’ Association, reports the Press Association.

Mr W. J. Green, of the staff of the Christchurch “Star-Sun,” has been appointed editor of the new Labour weekly the “Standard,” which will supplant the “New Zealand Worker” in about a month’s time, says a? Press Association message.

Appreciation of the attendance of dir ,J. T. Saunders at the opening of che new Tokaora fa'ctory yesterday was expressed by the chairman of directors of the Hawera Dairy Company (Mr H. E. Johnson). Mr Saunders was a director of the company in 1908.

Mr G. Newsham, of Turua, Hauraki Plains, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs A. L. Campbell, Fraser Road, returned home yesterday. Mr Newsham, who was born in Okaiawa, was making his first visit to Taranaki for 32 years. He is a nephew of the late Mr T. L. Joll and a cousin of Mrs A. L. Campbell. The death occurred at his New Plymouth residence yesterday of dir Andrew Haldane, who had a long association with the Egmont National Park. In the early days of the development of the area, dir Haldane was a chainman with survey parties on the mountain and later held positions as guide and caretaker at the North Egmont Hostel. Not long after the formation of the East Committee o* the National Park Board, dir Haldane was appointed caretaker of tile Stratford house, which position he resigned last year. During that time he reformed all the hush walks on that side of the mountain, dir Haldane leaves a wife and two daughters, dlisses Hilda and Molly. The funeral will be to-morrow.
