THE DEBUTANTE STAKES
YOUNGSTERS’ FIRST OUTING FIFTEEN HORSES NOMINATED SOME PROMISING SORTS. (By “Childers.”) The Wanganui Debutante Stakes of four and a-quarter furlongs, to be decided at Wanganui on Saturday, marks the first appearance of the two-year-olds this season in the Dominion. As usual, there is great interest in this event, which has drawn a fine field of fifteen. Of these, Hawera stables will provide three in Brilliancy (ExcitementGlittering), Waiongona (Colossus — Just So) and Gay Chief (Gay ;Sheild Persis). Owned by Mrs W. D. Graham and trained by O. COx, Brilliancy is the only Australian-bred youngster in the field. A fine looking colt, he is still a trifle backward and may be in need of a race. On the other hand, Owner-Trainer F. Ehrhorn has had Gay Chief in work for a 'considerable period. A fast beginner, he should be suited by the turning track and short distance and should be hard to beat. Waiongona has done a fair amount of fast work lately and is improving rapidly. She should give a good account of herself.
The Wanganui studmaster, Mr G. M. Currie, will 'be represented by Imposture (Posterity—lmpetuous) and Moquette (Limond —Motley), both of whom are trained by W. Rayner. The former is the first foal of her dam, Impetuous, who did little racing, but is a full sister to Damaris and Canopy and a half-sister to Motley, Lysander and Arisus. Moquette is a full sister to Variant and a half-sister to Legatee. Another South Taranaki youngster is Seeadler, a daughter of Lackham and Seastar, who was a useful performer when trained at Hawera v and a halfsister to Seatown and” Sea Fox. Seeadler is a chestnut filly owned by Mr J. B. Cresswell and trained at Stratford by J. Bufler. She is reputed to be a speedy galloper. F. Davis, who is temporarily quartered at Wanganui, has The Tramp (Arausio Penelophen) and Karl (Arausia —Sunny Hours) - { engaged. Both are owned by Mr T. 11. Lowry. Karl has been pleasing in his training efforts and may be the better of the pair. He is a brown colt and closely related to Passion Fruit, Los Gatos and Quixotic. Awapuni stables have Black Fox (Nigger Minstrel —Silver Grey), Mirth (Laughing Prince —Mandane) and Lavish (Limond —Imprudence). Black Fox' is a full brother to Niggerhead, owned by iMr W. A. lorns and trained by Luke Wilson. Lavish is a brown filly held on lease by her trainer, J. P. Coyle, and is a three-quarter sister to Davolo, besides being closely related to Jonathan and Fairfax. She has shown speed in her recent trials, and so has Mirth, who is trained 'by W. Pine for Mr and Mrs N. Blackmore. She is one of the first of her sire’s progeny and is a shapely filly. A well-bred youngster is Gullio (General Latour—Prodice), owned by Mrs S. L. Parsons and trained by A. Cook at Takanini. He is a bay colt and closely related to Ammon Ra,’ Phaola, Astarth, Prolyxo, Hymestra and a host of other good performers.
The Hastings trainer G. W. *33. Greene lias entered Essex (Siegfried— Gay Virginia) and "Mohua (Hunting Song—Moa Bird). Essex is a bay colt owned by Mr J. S. McLeod and is out of a full sister to Gesto, Hillock and Ganpat. Mohua is a filly and her breeding suggests that she should possess early speed, for her dam was of that typo. The remaining member of the field is Hunting Doll (Hunting Song—Tea Doll), owned by Mr J. M. Reedy, of Ruatoria, Poverty Bay. She is a bay filly and is related to La Poupee and Penelope.
