PUBLICANS’ GOLF TOURNEY

CHAMPIONSHIP TO E. MANLEY

A. O. CASEY BEATEN IN FINIAL DUNCAN WINS WHOLESALE TITLE In the final of the principal evtent, the retailers’ championship, at the North Island licensed victuallers’ annual golf tournament yesterday, E. Manley (Wanganui) defeated A. O. Casey (Eltham) after a well contested game in which the standard of golf was always good. The wholesalers’ championship fell to another Wanganui player in M. H. Duncan, who staged a strong finish to account for T. E. James (Wellington) in the final. In the final of the “cobbers” event, J., H. Boon produced some fine- golf to score a somewhat decisive win over G. M. Chong. The tournament, held at the New Plymouth Golf Club’s Ngamotu links, concluded in much improved weather. Detailed results of play were as follow:—

RETAILERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP Semi-finals A. O. Casey beat N. Higginson 5 up and 4. E. Manley beat A. N. Mathieson, 3 up and 2. Final. E. Manley beat A‘. O. Casey 3 and 1. Casey opened well by taking the first hole from Manley, but Manley then found his game and proceeded to collect the next four in a row. Casey rallied and by winning the 7th and 9th had reduced the margin to one. Casey looked likely to square the game at the long 10th, hut the unexpected happened. Manley staged a wonderful recovery from the old creek bed and holed a 12 feet putt for a win when Casey required three putts. He increased this lead to three with a fine par four at the lltli. Bbth were on the hillside at the short 12th, but Manley with a beautiful chip collected his three for another win. Four down with only six to play, Casey’s position looked desperate, hut he fought back in good style. A perfect three saw him win Moses, and lie was a little unlucky at the next, where his putt refused to drop. Manley was then dormy, but a grand four saw Casey win the 16th. The end came at the' next, where Casey was badly astray with his second and Manley making no errors, secured the bogey ■four which gave him the hole and the game 3 up and 1 to play-
