The match was a hard and fast one throughout. The packs were well matched, though Otago were more successful in getting possession of the ball from the set scrums and the lineouts until near the end of the match, when the ball wont a little more to the Christchurch side. The Otago backs, however, were a definitely better combination, both as to resouice, combination and speed. The teams were:— Otago (navy blue and white).- McLeod ; Chandler, Ruff, Duff: Moore, Chapman; Scott: Geary, Anderson, Chapman, Little (captain), Wilkie, Bckhoff, Mee, Smith. Christchurch (blue and black). — Thomson; Schmidt, Stevens, Osment; Menzies (captain), Cade; Saundercock; Hadfietd, Wells, Telfer, Neilson, Dove, Warring, Lake, Boyd. Otago gained the first territorial advantage and went deep into their opponents’ quarter, where Chandler was checked only just in time. Christchurch came to the attack and Cave and Saundercock worked the blind side to get close to Otago’s line, and from a scrum there Saundercock got possession and forced his way over for the first try, and Menzies converted. Christchurch s—Otagos—Otago 0.

Otago returned to the attack from the drop-out and worked their way to Christchurch territory. A neat hook from a scrum gave them the ball, and Moore cut in to make a good opening for Ruff, who scored near the posts, for Chapman to convert. Christchurch o—Otago 5. This was immediately followed by another try added by Chandler, who outstripped the opposition and scored in a handy position, hut the kick was charged down. Otago B—Christchurch 5. Hard rucking play in midfield followed with several free kicks to each side. Otago worked their way down to their opponents’ quarter, and again from a scrum they hooked. Chapman got possession and sent a long pass to Moore, who crossed, for the other Chapman to convert. Otago 13 — Christchurch 5. Eckhoff led Otago pack back again, and from just inside the 25yd. line Moore had a fruitless shot at potting a goal. By a swift move Christchurch worked back to Otago’s quarter, and the hall came out to Osment in the open, and he streaked for the line and scored at the corner, hut Menzies was not able to add the extra points, and the bell sounded the interval, with scores : Otago 13—Christchurch 8. Otago at once attacked when the match resumed, and Duff was nearly over at the corner, when Schmidt threw him into touch. Play came back to Otago’s quarter, and a fumble by Ruff nearly let the Christchurch boys through, but McLeod saved the position with a short kick to the line. After some hard tussling the Otago backs gained possession and Ruff gave Chandler tiro baftl Jjor a good try near the corner, hut the extra points went begging. Otago 16—Christchurch 8

Otago were immediately compelled to force, but back came Christchurch, and Schmidt made a great break and was brought down inches sliox-t of the line. From the scrum following Saundercock got possession and burrowed his way through to score, hut the kick failed. Otago 16—Christchurch 11. The Otago forwards worked hard and eventually Geary cleared to the 25yd. flag. Chandler and Mclntosh changed the complexion of the game by racing together down the side-line and shaking off the opposition the latter went over for the fifth try for Otago, which was not converted. Otago 19—Christchurch 11. ChristchurcTi returned to the attack and a nice move ended in Osment going over at the corner and Menzies converted with a splendid kick from the side-line. Otago 19— Christchurch 16. Huff and Chandler again made the play for Otago’s next try, which was a neatly executed move, and the kick at goal failed as the bell sounded “no sidcT,” with scores: Otago 22—Christchurch 16. Mr. N. Frost was referee.
