BARROW DERBY AT PATEA
BAND AND ATHLETIC FUNDS. BIACE NEXT SATURDAY NIGHT. .{From Our Own Correspondent). Patea. is to have a wheelbarrow derby. At a meeting of representatives of the Patea Municipal-Band and the Patea Amateur Athletic Assoeiation this week Mr J. Cunnison presided and explained that it was proposed to hold the derby in aid of the funds of both bodies. It had bedn suggested that the derby be held on August 31 at 7.10 p.m., the course to be from the domain gates to the Turi memorial and that tjie race be run across chalk lines, the competitors to have collected Is (3d before passing the first line, 4s before crossing the second, 7s 6d before crossing the third and 12s 6d before crossing the fourth line in the race to the winning post. It was decided to carry, out the suggestion subject to Borough Council approval. Mr N. Gardiner was appointed secretary. The band will play the competitors from the post office to the starting point and at the conclusion of the race the sums collected by the competitors will be divided between the band and the Athletic Association.
