BRITAIN AND LEAGUE Forecast of Line to be Taken by the Cabinet POLITICAL TRUCE CALLED LABOUR GIVES SUPPORT (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received 3 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Aug. 22. Well-informed circles state that the meeting of the Cabinet to discuss foreign affairs this evening decided to recommend to the full Cabinet that Britain should stand firmly by her obligations to the League Covenant. The decision implies, that if the League Council declares Italy to be the aggressor, the use of sanctions against Italy. The “Chronicle,” declaring tbe visit of the Opposition leaders to Whitehall to be interpreted as a Government desire to call a political truce to enable Britain to speak with a single voice, publishes declarations by Mr.

George Lansbury and Major Attlee assuring the Government of Labour’s unqualified support if loyalty to Britain is the League’s principles. Major Attless declares that there is no question of Britain acting unilaterally, but if given a guarantee of united League action, he personally would suport all measures, even to tlie use of the united Britslx and French fleets. However, it should not be difficult to bring economic pressure to bear on Italy. It is anticipated that at to-morrow s Cabinet meeting the report on the Paris conversations will be discussed and general discussions of the situation will follow. Further meetings of the Cabinet may be found necessary for formulating instructions to the British representatives at the League Counsel meeting on September 4, and for the question of export of arms to Italy and Abyssinia. News of the -Ministers’ conference and Mr MacDonald’s reference to 1914 weakened sentiment on the London Stock Exchange. Juotations ip many directions closed with material losses on the day.
