Gray in an address to the Auckland Presbyterian Association as one of the major difficulties faced by the missionaries in that country. The feeling was that everything Indian was right, and the missioners were subject to a great deal of annoyance and upset to their work as the result of nationalistic propaganda. The caste system, the bigotry of , villages and the status of womanhood were other difficulties. The status of women was still far below anything they would like to see. Except for a small proportion of well-educated women, the conditions suffered were difficult to describe.
