BIG IRRIGATION SCHEME

THE MANIOTOTO COUNTY. ESTIMATED COST £1,375,000. (By Telegrapli—Pres# Association,) DUNEDIN, Aug. 15. The advisability of introducing an irrigation scheme to develop the Maniototo county was brought before the acting-Prime Minister, Sir Alfred Hansom, by a deputaTTon, which pointed out that the area represented 'the largest available irrigation area in Otago. The Public Works Department had prepared all the necessary plans and estimates, and all that was required was Cabinet’s sanction for the c o m m en e emen t.

The area to he Irrigated was 87,000 acres, and with close settlement another 300 settlers iconld he accommodated. The estimated cost was £1,375,000, on which an unemployment subsidy of £458,333 -would be available. The Minister promised to place the matter before the Government.
