“SURPRISE PACKET OF 1935”
BOX PLAN OPENED YESTERDAY. OPENING NIGHT ON TUESDAY. The hookings for the “Surprise Packet of 1935” were excellent yesterday for the first day of the opening of the plans, and the promoters have every reason to feel gratified at the response on the part of the public. The season will open on Tuesday aiuT there will definitely he only two performances in Hawera. Already there have been requests for the performance to be repeated in the country districts, but in view of the fact that the cost of transport and the erection of the stage “spider web” and other properties jwould he too great, the proposal cannot be entertained. The management has also decided that no matinee performance can be given. The spider web which is used for that ballet took four men a considerable time to erect, and a lot of care had to be taken in its preparation in order to secure the maximum amount of safety under the strain of four persons climbing onjt. The stage staff are working every day preparing for the dress rehearsal, which will take place during the weekend, and when the curtain rises on Tuesday night everything will be in perfect' order for an excellent performance. There are over 100 performers in the production, which lias been under the care oi Miss Marjorie McLaughlin, and most of the performers were members of the “Aladdin pantomime company. ; Bookings have already been received from Opunake, Stratford, Waverley and Patea, and it is anticipated that there will be a full house to greet both performances. The performance will be preceded by a screening of ’’Romance in Manhattan,” starring Ginger Rogers.
