Fifty Years Ago

EXTRACTS FROM “HAWERA STAR” AUGUST 16, 1885 During the past twelve months a number of handsome buildings have been erected in Princes Street north —that is between the railway station and High Street—till that portion of the town has begun to assume quite' a businesslike appearance. The iatest, and by no means the least pretentious addition, is Mr J. Coffey’s block' of new buildings. . This is a large and commodious edifice, comprising two separate shops and suites of rooms. The shop nearest the town is occupied by Mrs Nelson as a drapery and millinery establishment, and the remaining portion is occupied by Mr Coffey as the Egmont Boot and Shoe Factory. * * * v * The Secretary of State for the Colonies has addressed a circular despatch to the Governors of the various Australasian colonies on the subject of colonial federation. It trusts that New Zealand and New South Wales will see their way to join the federal body. ,***** A report has lately been current that Germany has annexed some of the Caroline Islands over which Spain possesses a protectorate (as part of the Philippine Islands), with a view to obtaining Papuan labourers for the newly-established German settlement in New Guinea.
