HAWANGA CUP FIXTURE
HAWEBA DEFEAT WANGANUI. MARGIN OF SIX GOALS TO FOUR. Tho annual home and home match for the ITawanga Shield between the Hawera Men’s Hockey Club (holders) and Wanganui Old Boys was played on Wednesday at Wanganui and resulted in a win for ITawera by' six goals to four. The match throughout was played in driving rain, but the game was fast and open, despite the conditions. The score is a fair indication of the game, the Hawera team showing much better combination. The teams were:— Hawera (yellow and black). —Blake, McGlasban, Shaw, Spurdle, Fredericks, Lander, Simon, iSyme, Jones, Ryan, Miller.
Wanganui Old Boys (black and white). —Tippins, Wallace, B. Mclntire, Baker, Smith, Cairneross, Govcr, Pengolly, Taylor, L. Mclntire, D. O’Brien. Hawera defended the southern goal, and from the bully Wanganui attacked immediately, Mclntire sending across a good ccnLro for Baker to goal. Wanganui I—Hawera1 —Hawera 0. Hawera then pressed and Wanganui conceded a penalty corner, but iShaw carried for Wanganui to clear. Hawera continued to press and good play by Blake .and .Shaw gave Blake a shot at goal, winch he turned to good account. Hawera I—Wanganui 1. Hawera forwards pressed again, Shaw having a shot at goal, but O’Brien cleared. From a free hit well into Wanganui’s territory, Spurdle centred for MeGlashan to score. Hawera 2—Wanganui 1. Wanganui then took a turn, but offside play sent them back. Hawera then pressed, but Fredericks gave sticks when in a good position. From the free hit Wanganui carried play
to the Hawera circle, where Miller saved a hot shot. Wanganui "were soon back again, Smith scoring with a good angle shot. Wanganui 2 —Hawera 2. From the bully Hawera carried play into Wanganui territory for Blake to shoot, but O’Brien brought off a good save. Hawera forwards were 1 short passing here to good effect and O’Brien was called upon to save twice
in quick succession. However, they could not score and Wanganui took play to the Hawera circle and looked dangerous when a forward was pulled up for an infringement. MeGlashan took play through to the Wanganui circle from the free hit and in a melee in front of the goal he again scored to make the scores: Hawera 3—Wanganui 2.
Up and down play ensued, with no marked advantage to either team, till Hawera were forced to give a penalty corner, from which Smith shot a hot goal to equalise. Wanganui 3—Hawera 3. Hawera forwards again combined wen and pressed Wanganui hard, but Fredericks ’ shot missed by inches. Immediately after Blake had an ineffectual shot at goal and Wanganui cleared. 'Shortly after half-time was called with the score at 3 all.
After the interval, Hawera again pressed and held the advantage with an occasional invasion by Wanganui into Ilawera territory. Hawera were not to be denied and a good run by MeGlashan with fast, following up beat the goalie to again score. Hawera 4—Wanganui 3. From the bully Tippins put in a good run from half-way and, with a beautiful centre, Smith scored and once again the scores were equal. Wanganui 4 Hawera 4.
Wanganui icontinued to press and Ryan saved to send the forwards deep into Wanganui territory, where Shaw’s shot just missed. Wanganui returned play, but Hawera -were soon back again. Wanganui were given a few anxious moments here, but eventually cleared to carry play up-field only for Ryan to send them back again. The Wanganui forwards were finding it very hard to get past Ryan and he was sending them back with good, strong shots to his forwards. Blake carried play from his twenty-five and, with a good solo run, beat the backs and O’Brien to put Hawera in the lead. Hawera s—Wanganui 4. Time was vety close now and both teams were playing very fast, open hockey. Ryan cleared with a good shot which MeGlashan took on his stick and carried play into tho Wanganui circle to add his fourth goal. Hawera 6—Wanganui 4. Time was called immediately after.
WOMEN’S TEAM TO TOUR. Following the final between Manaia and New Plymouth Old Girls, a trial match was played for the purpose of allowing the selector (Mr M. Priest) to choose the team to go on tour. King (Inglewood), A. Clements (Stratford). JUNIOR DIVISION SEMI-FINAL. E TVER LEA DEFEAT AfAHOE. In the semi-final of the men’s junior competition' at Kaponga yesterday Riverlea defeated Afahoe by two goals to nil, and will meet Tokaora at Hawera in the Taranaki final on Wednesday next. The match was one of the fastest which have been witnessed in the competition this year. • Afahoe were a trifle unlucky and they appeared to be
belter than their play indicated. TJie play was fast and furious at times despite the slippery ground, which prevented players getting a good foothold. Both teams did excellent defensive work, and made some fine recoveries. The teams were:— Riverlea.—Afunro; Mills', F. Gargan; M. Gargan, Rothe, 11. Gargan; Benton (2), Johns (2), Rutherford.
