PREPARATIONS FOR SATURDAY. BAZAINE’S SMART FIVE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ July 23. The tracks at Awapuni were in good order this morning when candidates for the Manawatu winter meeting galloped. The flags wore well out. On the course proper Hunting Lodge and Round Score, with substantial weights tip, ran seven furlongs in 1.37, the first five furlongs in 1.7. Round Score ran to the front at the top of the straight, but Hunting Lodge was again on terms at the post. Note Issue cantered round to the three furlongs post and came home the last three furlongs in 40 3-5. Cyclopean ran the last two of three furlongs in 26 2-5. Evasion jumped away from the seven furlongs peg, Full Throttle picking her up a furlong later, the pair running six furlongs in 1.23 2-5. Full Throtle travelled well throughout. The Lavish and Kinsfolk, two-year-olds ran two furlongs in 26. Later Dawning Light alone ran 25. The firstnamed pair, however, went away from practically a flat-footed start. Hunting Jay ran an easy seven furlongs in 1.45. Frugal, Hilton Gorse and Kitty Quinn finished in that order after running five furlongs in T. 9. The Moose shaded Petrarch with Te Rangitumau close up at the end of live furlongs in 1.10. Happy Hunting strode over six furlongs in 1.23,1-5, covering the first three furlongs in 40 4-5. Gold Cure and Treasurt Hunt ran seven furongs in 1.38 4-5, and the first half mile in 57 2-5. Gold Cure was a shade in front at the close, but had a better weight. Bazaine registei’ed the smartest five furlongs of the morning, running 1.7 4-5, the first two furlongs in 26 3-5.
