Australia defeated England by three matches to one, with one unfinished, in a contest at Eastbourne under Davis Cup rules. On Thursday Crawford heat Perry and Austin beat McGrath. Yesterday Quist and Turnbull defeated Hughes and Tuckey (England), 3 —6, o—3, B—G, G —4. To-day’s results were : Crawford defeated Austin, 6—2, 6—4, 3_6. 6—3.

Perry versus McGrath, 2—6, 6—2, 3—l when the match was abandoned on account of rain.

Full of confidence after defeating Perry, Crawford drove deeply and powerfully and served well. He volleyed more often than usual. He altogether overshadowed the Englishman’s stylish but less virile game. Perry and McGrath fought at a great pace. McGrath ju the first set hammered backhand drives straight down the line with remarkable accuracy. but (Perry intensifying lijs boisterous belligerence, overwhelmingly won the second set.

Mr Wallis Myers, commenting in the “Daily Telegraph” on Crawford’s defeat of Perry, writes: “The Eastbourne form does not mean that Perry will play the same nit Wimbledon, where previously he has produced centre court regenerations. 'I he best Perry emerges on the right day. Nevertheless Crawford staged a game which even the best Perry would have difficulty in subduing.
