HAWERA’S GOOD FORM

STRATFORD HELD TO DRAW DUFF CUP SOCCER MATCHES THLSTLE LEAD ON POINTS. » The Duff Cup Association football competition was continued on Saturday in ideal weather. Stratford and Hawera drew: with three goals each. Motxiroa beat Albion by six goals to nil, while Thistle beat Manaia. by one goal to nil. The points table is as follows: Pts. Ch.

Stratford has been unbeaten for the past two seasons, but Hawera nearly lowered their colours in the drawn match at Stratford. The three goals scored by each team were the result of good combination and the result was a satisfactory conclusion. Stratford probably held a territorial advantage, but good defence by the visitors combined with an inability by the homo forwards, to take advantage of the opportunities offering kept the score down. The match was played at a, good clip and little was given by either side. Teams were as follow: Stratford.—H. Gibbs. J. Clarke, L. Jones, J. Jones, Jackson, Clements, H. Millar,, Barrow, C. Henderson, L. Blythe and Fear. Hawera.—A. Lobban, Longstaff, J. Cockerill, W. Barker, F. Starling, Griffin, K. James, Thompson, Corkindale, Thompson and N. Ogden. Referee : Mr G. Littlejohn.

Hawera won the toss and Henderson set the ball in motion. The Stratford forwards combined well and Longstaff conceded two consecutive comers in keeping his. goal dear. Starling cleared from the second one, but Jackson returned the ball to his front line, Blythe sending behind. Barker, receiving from the kick, sent infield. Thompson passed forward, enabling Corkindale to shoot straight to the gioalie who fumbled, eventually dropping behind. Hawera I—Stratford 0. Neat combination was seen after the kick. Cockerill beat Blythe to clear downfield, but Jackson again sent back to his. forwards. From a melee in front of the goal the ball was sent over the line by Henderson. Stratford I—Hawera 1.

Stratford continued the attadc, Henderson passing via Blythe to Fear and across to Millar, who rushed in to score. Corkindale kicked off to Frampton, who sent out to Barker and across to- James. Clarke cleared the centre to Clements, who sent Fear away on the wing. The centre to Henderson was used to advantage, Lobban being unplaced. Stratford 3 Hawera 1.

Stratford maintained the pressure. Henderson lost to Longstaff, who cleared. Jackson received and kicked downfield. Longstaff headed dear to Starling who sent on to Corkindale, but the uneveness of the ground heat him, allowing L. Jones to clear. Halftime sounded with the score: Stratford 3—Hawera 1.

On the resumption Hawera immediately took up the attack. Bad shooting, however, saw several goal kicks for Stratford misfire. X/. Jones cleared to Clements, who sent on to Fear, but the latter held on too long and sent behind! Stratford combination as now lacking and several individ-

ual efforts proved fruitless. Starling secured and passed to James, who cut in to shoot. Gibbs again fumbled, giving Hawera. another goal. Stratford 3—Hawera 2. Hawera fought hard, to equalise. Longstaff cleared from Barrow to Starling, who sent in a spectacular shot from about 30 yards out, giving the “goalie” no possible chance. Stratford 3—Hawera. 3. Stratford took up the attack. Jackson received and kicked down-- the centre. Henderson and Longstaff rushed feu the hall and both went down, wrenching their legs. Henderson . left the field temporarily, but Longstaff continued. Fear received and cut in from the wing, -but Cockerill cleared to Starling who l sent- down to Corkindale. Gibbs managed to get the ball away to L. Jones who cleared. The ball went to Griffin who passed to Thompson, but a. poor shot was cleared by Gibbs. Hawera continued to press and the Stratford goal bad several narrow escapes. The game ended with no further score. Stratford 3—Hawera 3.

THISTLE'S EASY WIN. ONE GOAL AGAINST MANAIA. SUPERIOR COMBINATION. Although displaying a superior combination Thistle could score only one goal to nil in the soccer match against Manaia at Manaia on Saturday. Although tlie football was of a fair standard there was little incident for the spectators. Thistle’s goal was scored well in the second spell. Teams were as follow: Thistle.—Johnson; Crawford, MeKie; J. Rae, L. Henderson, Black; J. Hill, J. Collingwood, James, C. Collingwood. Manaia.—C. Austin; J. Mowatt, J. Williamson; E. Austin, G. Williamson, McGregor; W. Williamson, Skinner, Muggeridge, Freakley and Phillips. Play opened in indifferent fashion, Tliistie having most of the 'ball against an uphill grade. The visitors’ solid combination troubled Manaia time and again. Mowatt, at full back for Thistle, played a. sound game and saved often. There was no score at halftime. Manaia were kept in their own half for the greater part of the second spell, only good defence keeping the score down. Shots at goal were frequent and Austin, in goal for Manaia, was a safe custodian. From a scramble in the goal, McKie scored the only goal of the match from a cross shot.—Thistle 1, Manaia 0. Mr A- R°ss was referee. MOTUROA’S EASY WIN. ALBION SIX GOALS BEHIND.

Although Moturoa 'beat Albion by six goals to nil at the New Plymouth racecourse on Saturday the game was far from dull. Moturoa. showed a marked improvemeixt in their play and the work of P. Gardner, F. Roper and the Parrish brothers was outstanding. Berry as usual played well for Albion, i but his one weakness is selfishness and he tries to do too much on his own. Rogers showed up at goal for Albion and Rosser was good in the same capacity for Moturoa. Goals were scored for Moturoa by Gardner (2), H:. Parrish (2), R.. Parrish and Roper. The teams were:

Albion.—Rogers, Beatty, Cursons, Nichol, Heat-ley, Berry, Clarke, Upshall, Christensen, Roberts, Croker. Moturoa.—Rosser, R. Johns, H. Johns, Hoti, FL Rb;>er. Cimimins, White. P. Gardner, R. Parrish, H. Parrish, Skipper.
