Including £16,000 already collected, £21,000 has been realised for the reafforestation of Palestine, £SOOO of which W'as subscribed by guests representing London Jewry at a Guildhall dinner in aid of the King George jubilee forest fund. Already the Jewish national fund has acquired 100,000 acres in Palestine and settled 30,000 Jews on it, apart from regular migration. • - Lord Melehett, who presided, aroused cheers when he described Palestine as the potential Singapore of the Near East, protected not by English battalions, but also by 3,000,000 grateful Jews. Sir Herbert Samuel urged the repopulation of Palestine as a sacred duty. ■ The King acknowledged a message of loyalty from the guests, who cheered the announcement. His Majesty has given the first tree from Windsor Park for planting by the High Commissioner in the autumn.
