‘ PARLIAMENTARY EVENING.’ ’ FOUR “BILLS” CONSIDERED. Four “bills” were considered at a ‘“Parliamentary meeting,” held by the Hawera Literary and Debating Society on Monday. There was a large attendance of members and visitors. sir E. Dixon presided as “Mr SpeakI er” and gave considerable latitude, there being many lively interjections. The members of the Government were Messrs G. H. Percy (Prime Minister), E. L. Mulcock (Minister of Justice), F. Walker (Minister of Finance) and Miss N. Kent (Minister of Internal Affairs). The “opposition” consisted of Messrs A. F. Olsen (leader), 'Misses M, Bates, D. Clement and Mr C. Nicholson. “That the present legislation limiting free speech be repealed,” was a Government Bill moved by Mr Mulcock and Opposed byAlr Nicholson. The Bill was lost, as also was one moved by the opposition (Mr Olsen) that bookmakers should he licensed in New Zealand. - . The opposition was successful in carrying a. “no-confidence” motion on a Bill: “That this side of the House protests against the expenditure involved in sending a procession of Cabinet Ministers, wives ami heads of departments to Great Britain.” The motion was moved hv Miss Bates and opposed by Mr Percy. A final Bill, that Asiatics should be excluded from New Zealand, moved by Miss Kent and opposed by Miss Clement, was declared .lost. I
