EXTRACTS FROM “HAWERA STAR” * JUNE 18. 1885 The plaintiff in a breach of promise case at Thnaru got seven days for assaulting the defendant in court. ***** At Folkestone two boys were fined for throwing large fish hooks at the Salvation Army. The hooks were attached to pieces of string. * * * * * Sir George Whitmore’s appointment to the command of the colonial forces is not looked upon with favour, and the feeling has increased since the measures circulated by the Government have been in the hands of members. It is expected that the Whitmore Indemnity Bill will be rejected by the House. ***** The Normanby Hop Growing Company’s hops are now in the market and the support of the public generally is solicited. They can be obtained at the agents —Messrs Gardner and Sutton, Hawera; W. L. England, Normanby, and from the manager at the Normanby nursery. •* * The provisional directors of the Manaia Dairy Co. Ltd. are Messrs R. E. Mcßae, «J. C. Yorke, D. Hughes, E. Newing, J.- W. Stoddart, A. Hastie, W. S. Campbell, J. L. Perry, W. A. McCutchan, J. Milne, D. Carroll, W. S. Young, P. McCarthy, C. Lewis and D. Leitch. Air W. A. McCutchan is secretary and treasurer. At the R.M. court to-day a Maori was charged with being drunk in charge of a horse. ***** Several months ago the Russian Government interfered to suppress the mission work that for seven or eight years had been carried on in the empire by the Religious Tract Society of London. It is now stated, however, that all the tracts confiscated have been returned by the Government, and permission has been given to resume the work of gratuitous distribution of religious reading.
