When pressed in the Irish Free State Dail to state definitely whether or not he was aiming at separating the Free State from the British commonwealth of nations, the President of the Council, Mr E. de Valera, replied: “We have followed our programme scrupulously. The people know perfectly well we are not going to declare a republic during this period of office. There* will he no question of declaring a republic until the people have been consulted.”
