LIVE STOCK IMPORTATION
SUPPORT FOR EMBARGO DISEASE OUTBREAK FEARED FARMERS’ UNION VIEWPOINT The opinion that the existing embargo on the direct importation of live stock should not be lifted was | re-affirmed at the conference of the j South Taranaki Executive of the Farmers’ Union at Haueia yesterday. A remit to this effect was sponsored hv the Auroa, Lowgarth and Okaiawa branches. . A prepared case against the lifting of the embargo was read by Mr A A. Piper (Lowgarth), who quoted Irom authorities and the Press and gave details of the effect and extent of foot and mouth disease in England. ‘‘That this conference supports the move to lift the embargo on imported stock, provided the Department of Yoriculture is satisfied that the logulations lay down adequate safeguards against the introduction of foot and mouth disease,” was a remit sponsored bv the Alton, Alokoia and AYhakamara branches. Considerable discussion took place as to whether this was a direct negative to the previous remit. It was eventually' ruled to be so by the chairman. Mr E. -T. Betts, and discussion lapsed.
