DE VALERA’S HINT
Possible Abolition Governor=Generalship POLITICAL CIRCLES STIRRED ELECTION PROBABLE? (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright). Received 3.0 p.m. to-day. DUBLIN, May 2S. Mr E. de Valera’s renewed hint of 1 the abolition of the Governor-General-ship has stirred political circles, who wonder whether it portends an election with the object of declaring a republic. The Dail was debating the expenses vote when Mr McDermott challenged Mr de Valera to justify the GovernorGeneral’s allowance of £2OOO, in view of the usurping of his duties. Mr McDermott asserted that the GovernorGeneral’s duties could nowadays be performed by a junior clerk. Mr de Valera replied that if the opposition did not want the GovernorGeneral the present vote for his office could be the last. Mr McDermott emphasised that the opposition did not favour the abolition of the office of the King’s representative, but urged a reduction of his emoluments proportionally with his services. Dir de Valera suggested that in default of the opposition support, the Government would undertake alone, the task of abolishing tlio GovernorGeneralship.
