EARTHQUAKE LIABILITY
BUILDING REGULATIONS URGED. APPEAL FOR RESEARCH WORK. (By Telegrapli—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 2S. In his presidential address at the science congress of the Royal Society last evening Professor R. Speight, Christchurch, covered a wide field with his subject, “Relation of geology to some other branches of science and some of the learned professions,” and appealed for encouragement of all branches of research dealing with fundamentals. Stressing, the fact that the whole of the Dominion was liable to severe earthquakes, he expressed dissatisfaction with the response to the society’s urging that building regulations should be enforced adequately to ensure safety of life and property. He advocated the establishment of a volcano observatory, either on Tongnriro or White Island, pointing out that although New Zealand volcanos had no obvious connection with its major earthquakes the whole question of the stability of the fabric of the country was bound up with proper observation of these phenomena.
