(United Pres.? Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright). Received noon to-day. TOKIO, April 23. T ATEST official earthquake figures show that 3185 are dead, destroyed in what is described as the greatest earthquake disaster that has overtaken Formosa, a Japanese island possession 1000 miles south of Japan. There have been 40 minor shakes'recorded since 6 aim. on Sunday and' tlespatches from Taihoku report that the people are huddling in a panic, fearing further shocks and the alarming rumours of tidal waves. It is estimated that the homeless approach 100,000 in number, but relief workers are now beginning to cope with the situation. Although the entire island was shaken the biggest toll was confined to an area 40 miles in diameter north of Taichu, especially in the Toyahara district. The damage at present is estimated at 10,000,000 yen. Industries apparently are not badly damaged. The Government allocated 16,000,000 yen to the relief fund and for reconstruction purposes.
