RIVERLEA HALL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING HELD.

SOUND) FINANCIAL- POSITION.

(From Our Own Correspondent). The annual general meeting of the River lea Hall Society was held on Monday evening last, when there was only a -small attendance, Mr H. Hooper, the president of the society being in the chair.

The annual report congratulated the members on a -successful year, while in spite of heavy expenditure owing to the repainting of the hall had ended with a small credit balance. In connection with the painting, it would be remembered that the president and secretary had volunteered to canvass the district for funds and this appeal had resulted in approximately £l3 being promised, of which over £ll had been paid to date. This amount, of course, did not nearly cover the cost of the painting and necessary repairs, but it had been of very material assistance and thanks were due to the residents for their help. In February t}ie painting had been carried -out by members of the society, under the very able leadership of the president and thanks were due also for help in this work to Messrs. H. Benton and C. F. Julian who had come along and given two or three days each to the work. Owing to matters in connection with the painting and for various other reasons more meetings than usual had been held during the year and four new members had also been elected. In October Mr Whiting, of Opunake, had approached the committee with an application to show' pictures and this had, subject to certain conditions, been agreed to and a good class of inctures shown. Some metalling work had been necessary in connection with this to allow Mr Whiting to get round the hall. During the year several euchre parties had been held and these had shown a. small profit. A fancy dress masquerade ball held in July had been very successful and although expenses w'cre heavy had resulted in a net profit of about £7, which had been, earmarked for a piano fund. During the year a piano had 'been offered to the society and although this was quite a good instrument for various reasons it was quite unsuitable for ball use and so was not purchased. Risviewing the- balance-sheet it w'as pleasing to note that there was a credit balance at the end of the year of £9 las 4d, but against this were outstanding accounts for £4 14s 3d. Receipts had totalled £59 12s compared with only £27. 15s 5d last year and expenditure had amounted to £SO Is Bd, compared with only £l4 16s lid for the previous year. The chief items on the receipts side were the credit balance from the year ended March 31, 1934, amounting to £l2 13s fid; £l7 17s 9d received from entertainments; rents and-hires £8 17s fid; public donations w'ere £ll 5s 6d and •sundry other receipts amounted to £S 12s ‘9d. The chief items of expenditure were .repairs, renewals and improvements, which amounted to £26 7s fid. Euchre parties and dance £ll Is 3d; lighting £4 19s lOd; heating £1 3s fid; rates and insurance £3 7s Id, and the remainder w'as due to secretarial expenses, advertising and bank charges. 1 Thei society was in a very sound position as, after writing off . reasonable depreciation there was a preponderance of assets over liabilities of £521 13s 7d, which was a reduction of £9 3s fid which latter sujn was the los3 on the year’s working. Members were warned that in spite of the society’s very healthy position the lack of greater income was a menace to the successful carrying on of the work and of keeping in good condition the society’s property. On the motion of Mr J. Gibson, seconded by Mr J. W. Kenyon, the report and balance-sheet were adopted-

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted in Mr H. Hooper being re-elected president. Mr J. Gibson as. vice-president, Mr M. F. Voullaire as secretary and Mr R. E. McGregor as auditor. The members present, with power to add, were elected as the committee for the year.
