A MODERN ST. GEORGE
We all know the story of St. George, who went forth and stayed the great dragon, and here’s a story of a modern St. George, only, Instead of a dragon, he killed a great, fierce, wounded elephant with his spear, and then, later on, when called upon again, accounted for yet another infuriated elephant, his only weapon being his spear. The first time he was accompanying a game scout in Northern Uganda. The scout had wounded two elephant bulls of a marauding herd, which was a menace to native crops and villages in the neighbourhood. One of the bulls, only slightly wounded, charged the scout, and pinned him to the ground. Out ran Omara, for that is the modern St. George’s name, wrenched the Title from between the elephant’s feet, and, as ho could not reload it, attacked the elephant with bis spear. He drove it off, and carried the wounded scout back to the village, a journey of three miles Unfortunately, the scout succumbed to his injuries.
His second heroic fight was with a» infuriated elephant which had taken possession of a village waterhole and terrorised the neighbourhood. The villagers could do nothing, so they sent for Omara. He took his trusty spear, and ,put the elephant to death, so that there was still one elephant fewer'to maraud the native villages and crops in Uganda.
A new baby brother had arrived at Willie Jones’s house.
"What is your brother’s name, Willie?” asked a friend of tho family. ; ' "We don’t know yet/’ said the little boy. "None of. us. can understand a word he says.’.’
There had been a collision between a motor-car and a haycart, with the result that the liay was upset. A boy Avho had been leading the horse was surv eying the damnge. "Hadn’t you better run find tell your father?” queried the motorist. "He knows already,” replied the boy. "But how can he?” protested the ear driver.
“He’s under the hay,” was the quiet retort-
