GAOL FOR YOUNG MAN
THEFT OF CLOTHING. OPUNAKE COURT SENTENCE. Pleading guilty, to two charges of theft at the Opunake Police Court on Thursday, Raymond Hook, a young man, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative.
The first charge related to articles stolen from Runnythorpe, said Constable Olouston. When interviewed Hook admitted he had stolen the articles, consisting of four singlets, a bathing costume, a pair of underpants, a bicycle bag, a towel and a quantity of odd coins of a total value of £6 3s.
The second charge was in respect of a leather coat valued at £3 10s, the property of Hugh Reid. This was taken from the owner’s motor-cycle at Pihama on March 19. A coat of similar appearance was found in the possession of Hook, and when the constable said it corresponded with, the missing article Hook admitted, lie liaci taken it as he was passing on a bicycle. He had been previously convicted for dishonesty, the first- time being 10 years ago. ’ ~ “You are qualifying for reformative detention for an indefinite period,” said Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M. “If I order this it will be out of my hands to say for how long. Ido not want to do so but you will probably get it if you are convicted again by. me or any other magistrate.” An order was made for the return or the property.
