EXTRACTS FROM “HAWERA STAR” APRIL 15, 1885.
In the course of a discussion at the Waimate Road Board, it was ascertained that more money had been allocated to the Manaia Road than was accruing to that part of the district, in consequence of some of. the Treasury returns being misunderstood. It was found impossible to get to the bottom of the accounts at the meeting. Sergeant Anderson was busy yesterday making up a roll of the firstclass militia in Hawera. The ages of this class are 17 to 30. * * » * * The successful tenderer for the Main Trunk railway, Marton end, is Mr Johnson, of Wanganui. Air Johnson is the contractor who built the Hawera Borough Council Chambers. * * * « * Our attention lias been drawn to the state of Albion Street which, in past years, as soon as the weather sets in, has been almost impassable for pedes-
trian. We would suggest to the Council that while they are improving the footpaths in the centre of the town, a few loads of gravel might be placed on the paths there. The residents in the locality would consider it a great boon. * * * * *' The Wanganui City Rifles, at special meeting last week, passed a resolution offering their services to the Government for active service in the field in the event of war. The services were offered for Wellington or elsewhere in the colony. «
