SCOTTISH CONCERT

FIRST OF 1935 SERIES HAWERA SOCIETY ENTERTAINS NATIONAL SONG AND STORY For the commencement of its 1935 concert series, the Hawera Scottish Society last evening presented a diversified programme of national song and story to a large audience of members at St, Mary’s Parish Hall. Attractive ;stage decorations were arranged by members of ■ the committee, and Chief D. McCormick presided. Associated with him was Chieftain D. Wards (Okaiawa). In yveleoming the members, Chief McCormick remarked on the steady increase in the enrolment of new members which, he said, augured well for the success of the society during the season. He appealed, to all the older members of the society to assist the committee in this direction and trusted that they would do what they could to make newcomers “at home'’ in

their midst. An apology was tendered for the absence of Mrs L. A. Tay-

lor (official accoinpaniste), who was indisposed, and a welcome was extended to Mrs Antoni Bonetti who was

present igp perforin those duties in her stead.

Congratulations on behalf of the society were conveyed to the Hawera Highland Pipe Band on its success at the recent Taranaki Brass and Pipe Bands contest in which it was awarded first for quickstep and first for selection; The band’s achievement’s, said the Chief, reflected the utmost credit on the work of Drum-Major J. R, Nairn and Pipe-Major Bruce Henson, as well as on the performance of the bandsmen themselves. The contest judge in his remarks had classed the Hawera combination as among the best of the B grade pipe bands in the Dominion —a distinction of which the band, the society, and the people of Hawera were justly proud. (Applause) . -On the call of the chairman cheers were given to mark the society s appreciation of the band’s efforts.

Following the singing of the National Anthem, the band played the tests, “Willie Mac Kay,” Louden’s “Bonnie Woods and Braes, and McPhee’s “Scottish Reel.” Pianoforte solos, the valse caprice “Three Blind Mice” and “To a Wild Rose,” were played by Miss Molly McKinnon; vocal solos, “My Ships” and “The Cuckoo,” were sung by Mrs O. Hartmann and a Highland fling was danced by Olive Worley and Cynthia Little, the pupils of Miss Doreen Nairn. Mr J. Crompton (Manaia) was heard in three poplar vocal solos, “Scots Wha Hae!”, “I Travel the Road,” and “Trees,” and Mr W. S. Gibson played the ’cello solos, “Aria” (by Tenaglia) and Schubert’s “Serenade.” A young vocalist in Miss M. Smith was heard to advantage in two numbers, “The First Violet,” and “L’Envio,” while Pipers I. and D. Campbell won applause .in their pipe duet, “Magers Fontein.” In the second half of the programme Mr W. G. Simpson entertained with songs typically Scottish in humour, his numbers including “Wee Coopers o’ Fife.” Mrs Hartmann and Mr Taylor sang the duet “Wha't’s a’ the Steer, Kinimer,” and the ever popular Scottish comedy sketch, “As Others See Us,” was played by Mrs C. Twaddle and Mr Simpson. For the concluding item Mr Taylor delivered an address on Scottish patriotism, with the object of reviving the practice in other years of introducing in the programmes discourses on national. traditions. During the evening short stores were told by the Chief. Mrs Bonetti, Mrs Simpson and Piper lan Campbell were the accompanists. After supper the floor was cleared for old-time and modern dancing, a grand march to pipe music being led by the Chief and Mrs J. W. Velvin. Mrs AttrilL was pianiste, and Mr Nairn, master of ceremonies.
