CLAIM FOR £3OO DAMAGES
SALESMAN’S ALLEGATIONS (By Telegraph—Press Association., INVERCARGILL, March 2S. An action for £3OO general -damages on the grounds of libel -was brought in the Magistrate’s Court to-day by Benjamin Thomas Eastlake, Invercargill, a boot .salesman, against John- Ivingsland and 00., Invercargill, boot importers.
Eastlake in his statement of claim set out that until October 13 last he was an employee of the company', and since that date ho had been carrying on business at Invercargill as a boot salesman. On January' 5 the company published in the "Southland Daily News” an advertisement in the course of which were the following words: “We have weeded out our staff and trained our assistants in scientific fitting of footwear and have now a service which is second to none in the Dominion and is yours for the asking at no extra cost to you.” Eastlake alleged that the company meant thereby that he had been discharged from the staff of the company' as being an inferior, salesman, a useless employee -and a noxious person, such publication being false and malicious. The hearing was adjourned to April 12 in order to allow counsel for Eastlake to subpoena further witnesses.
