FIELD DAY AT KAPONGA

DISTRICT CATTLE CLUB SHOW AWARDS IN THREE SECTIONS POPULAR. ANNUAL FIXTURE* Amply demonstrating the useful purpose which it serves in the community, the Kaponga Jersey Cattle Club yesterday held a most successful field day for, in spite of the adverse weather, theer was a large attendance and good entries were received jn practically all the sections. The event took the form of a miniature show and the accommodation at Newton King’s saleyards was taxed to full capacity. Entries in three sections—dairy cattle, horses and pigs—were invited from all sections of the community/irrespective of whether the owner was a member of the chib or not. As a result the pens were well filled and friendly rivalry characterised the day’s proceedings as the judges went about their work. Substantial cash prizes were awarded with a number of special trophies donated by well-wishers. Commercial firms arranged a number of attractive displays while special seating accommodation was provided around the ring. Luncheon and afternoon tea was served during the day by a ladies’ committee. The horses were a strong class, several splendid animals coming before the judge (Mr C. H. Washer, -Hay era). School ponies were again much in evidence and were judged in two divisions, light and heavy types. Classes for pigs were introduced for the first time, but th e entries were small. A cup for most points in the horse classes was won bv Mr A. Alexander, Matapu.

In opening the show, Mr G. H. Bell, Oakura, complimented the club on the fine showing of stock and said it was to be congratulated on initiating such an event. The exhibitors were to be praised for their support of such an excellent movement. He considered it was an education to travel to shows and see the results of the judging. It was specially valuable when the judge gave his comments on the animals and the reasons for his awards. This mode a show ever so much more educative. The Ivaponga Jersey Club was not receiving the assistance from the Jersey Association that it deserved. A. and P. association shows were subsidised to a considerable extent and he thought the Jersey Association might be able to assist the Kaponga club in a similar manner in future. Much of the detail work fell to the lot of Mr A. 13» Keightley, the club s energetic honorary secretary, to whom credit is due largely for the success of this annual fixture. He w'as assisted by the club president (Mr S. J. Hollard) and members of the committee. Section judges, stewards and awards were as follow :
