Coronilla Looks Likely. Last season Coronilla showed exceptional brilliance at times, but was rather hard to follow. However, in her few starts to date this season she has raced much more honestly, improving steadily with each effort. It appears to be only a matter of the Chief Buler filly going on the right way to develop into 'a decidedly useful sprinter. Poniard is Smart. Before going to the South Island the former Hawke’s Bay hack Poniard gave promise qi cfeing a ciij above the average and at' time's fan spfnc really splendid races. lie will be started for t}ie first time in his new quarters at the '.South Canterbury meeting on Saturday week, where he claims an engagement in the Eoseville Hack, of one mile and 35 yards. If produced at his best the Greyspear gelding should trouble the opposition.

Curie Races Again. An interesting candidate for the Sherenden Flying Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay J.C. meeting on Saturday is Curie, who will be having his first start since he ran second with 9.12 in the Winter Oats Handicap at Trentham last July. Curie is undoubtedly a class galloper and despite his lack of racing will need to be only fairly well forward to take a power of beating with 9.0, which ,is rather g luxurious weight for him. Jockeys’ Supremacy. Before the commencement of the week-end racing R. J.. Ellis was one win ahead of W. J. Broughton, but whereas Ellis won four races at the Oamaru fixture, Broughton had only three at iManawatu, so Ellis now has a lead of two. Ellis lias ridden G7' and Broughton 65 winners so far this season, and with four months still to go the prospects of botli horsemen of reaching the century mark appear to be quite bright. Broughton will be af the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday arid Ellis at the Birehwood Hunt fixture. Ganpat Reappears. An interesting runner at the Tauranga fixture was Ganpat, who raced prominently in the hurdle event on the opening day, while his condition lasted. When quartered at Wanganui the season before last Ganpat showed decidedly promising form over the battens and at one stage w r as regarded as a ’Northern or a ’National prospect. However, he went amiss and last season raced on only one occasion. Being only a six-year-old, Ganpat is still a comparatively young horse for a jumper, and provided he remains sound, this son of Lord Quex should have little difficulty in winning a hurdle race or two before long.

From Staying Family. Sunee has had a rapid rise to fame, for prior to his victory in the Champion Hack Cup, he Had done very little of note. However, his win in that event and his subsequent form at Awapuni indicates that Owner-Trainer C. Loire should win a really big handicap before long with this gelding. He is included in the entries for the C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap and it would occa'sion no surprise to find him playing 1 a prominent part, in th edecision of the big Biccarton event. Sunee comes from a very stout family and his halfbrother’s (Belgamba) successes included the V.B.CV St. Legcr, A..T.C. St. Lcger, S.A.J.C. St Leger, Bond Cup (1$ miles), and several other important long distance events. He is by Australian Sun (Sunstar —Bosewarne) out of Bunee by Earlson out of Birida (sister to first-class performers in Eniir and Bcanba) by Wallace out of Emmie by Robinson Crusoe out of Olga.

Barecourt is Consistent. There have been few more consistent hacks racing of late than Bare-] court, who in his last nine starts has run two first's, three seconds, two thirds and one fourth. With 'a little more luck this record would probably have been much better, but, nevertheless, it

is quite a satisfactory one. Da recourt should be greatly benefited by his recent racing and should be an excellent proposition in his approaching races. Stock Racing Well. The stock of the Lucullus horse, King Lu, have been racing very prominently of 'late and at Tauranga on Monday they had a day out, Boyal Secret and King Mestor winning, while in one event three of his progeny in Keith Lu, King Brierly and Queen Nona ran first, second and third respectively. Like most colonial-bred sires, King Lu lias not received the best of opportunities, but nevertheless, he has sired some decidedly useful gallopers. King Lu was a first-class performer on a heavy track, a fact that may be worth keeping in mind with winter racing near at hand, for some of his stock will most likely have inherited this trait. Smart East Coaster. Blue Needle, who hails from the East Coast, gives every indication of developing into a decidedly useful sort, for she has started on only three easions to secure two firsts and a second. Although the class she has beaten has not been strong, the manner iii which she has won has been most attractive. Blue Needle is a black filly three years of age by Threadneedlc out of Blue Sea. She is owned by Mr G. S. Moody and trained by J. White at Opotiki,

Encouraging Effort. Silver Fox, third in Saturday’s Novice Stakes at Oamaru, is'a chestnut colt by Pink Coat from Saxette by Saxby, and is being raced by his breeder, Mr J. j. Earl, who had Saxette trained at Biccarton some six years ago. He is a well-grown youngster closely resemoling his sire, and with some more racing promises to develop into a useful galloper.

Plato’s Next Appearance. The promising Iliad colt Plato will make his next appearance at the Hawke’s Bay meeting at Hastings on Saturday, wliere lie is engaged in the two-year-old event. Plato made a very promising debut at Trentham, and with the experience gained should be hard to beat this week. Will Require Time. One of the biggest two-year-olds seen out this season in the south is Jack Ahoy, a bay gelding by Lord Warden from Receipt,] dam of'Blixtiffi. He is owned by his breeder, Mr G. A. Ivain, and. made his debut last week, fie is as yet very green, and was not expected to make much showing, but the experience should do him good in view of racing him more seriously next season. Daughter of Merry Roe. Blue Vision, who was among the starters at the recent Opotiki meeting, conics from an illustrious family, for she is by Garter Blue from Merry Eoe, a great performer in her day. Blue Vision is thus a half-sister to Murry Damon, Merry Mint, Merry Peel, Ivilroe and Sunny Bose. She has not had much experience, but she should be able to gallop, seeing how she is bred. She is faced by Mr E. Fitzgerald, who owns Sunny Sky, and is trained by IT. Tinsley at Gisborne. Only Wants the Best. Mr L. Iv. S. Mackinnon, chairman of the Victoria Baring Club, has sold the Kampion two-vear-old Stratherdale privately to the trainer, F. W. Hoystecl. After some good form earlier in the season, much was eppected of Stratherdale in the recent Melbourne autumn campaign, but he raced disappointingly. Stratherdale’s former box is now filled by the Night Baid —Quadrilateral colt for whom Mr Mackinnon paid 1450 guineas at the Trentham sales.

Davolo Returns. Davolo, who has been off the scene since November, when he suffered injuries while racing at Biccarton, has been taken in hand again by C. Dayev. So far he has do he only light exercise, but he is due for an early return to serious tasks, with a view to rinding out if he can bo got Teady to win more good races. He has been nojninated for the Great. Easter Handicap, but it is doubtful if he can be: at his best so soon.

Still Travels. Black Duke was not dangerous in either of his high-wcighE engagements at Oamaru, and it would seem as if his chances of winning more races will have to be confined to hurdle events. He figured recently in a nontotalisator meeting at. Maniatoto in Central Otago, and with 12.7 on his back, and ridden by A. E. Didham, he was narrowly beaten by Membo, ridden by B. Beale, in a mile and a quarter race. The latter is stated to be in a great order to undertake a preparation for winter racing.
