IRISH BORDER PROBLEM

SMUGGLERS AND COWS. ACCIDENT TO GOODS TRAIN. Eight wagons were overturned and two cows were killed when a goods train came in collision with cattle on the railway line between Strabane, Tyrone County, Ireland and Porthall, Donegal, early one morning a few weeks ago. Civic Guards were trying to discover who owned the cattle. The accident happened in Free State territory, a quarter of a mile from the TyroneDonegal border. It is believed that the cattle were being driven along the line to be smuggled under cover of darkness across the border. The fireman of the train walked a mile to Porthall to report the accident to the stationmaster on one side or the border and the guard walked two miles to Strabane to report to the stationmaster bn the other side. The goods train had been ordered to run one hour earlier, and it is presumed that the smugglers were unaware of the change.
