INCOME TAX EVASION
ANDREW MELLON SUIT. COST THE TREASURY MILLIONS. (United Preoe Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright). PITTSBURGH, March 7. The Andrew Mellon income tax evasion suit, in which the former Secretary of the Treasury is trying to clear his name, reached a climax today when Government counsel offered to prove .that the Union Trust Company, which Mellon controlled, was “the hub of a giant wheel of tax avoidance.” He said officials of the company, through various subsidiaries, made deals to show huge capital losses for the sole purpose of evading taxes. Such transactions “cost the Treasury millions in revenues.” Mellon and his legal advisers were obviously perturbed at the charge and asked for an adjournment to study the legality of the admission of such evidence. This the court granted.
