STEERED BY FAULTY COMPASS

lady young misdirected. FORCED DOWN IN CORNFIELD. (United new Association—By Elrestrio lelegrapb Copyright). Received noon to-day. CAPE TOWN, March 8. Lady Young attributes the misdirection of her flight to a faulty compass. Petrol ran short- and she decided to land in an open space which proved to be Kaffir corn. The crop clogged the undercarriage and the ’plasie overturned. Natives supplied food, Dr Kirby having a knowledge of the native language. Lady Young was carried 90 miles through dense bush by the natives while Dr Kirby walked.

A message from Cape Town on March 3 stated that Lady Young, wife of the Governor of Rhodesia, left Livingstone on the morning of March 1, flying in her own machine, accompanied by Dr Kirby, the Government medical officer for Lusaka, where the Governor is staying at present. The ’plane was sighted an hour after leaving, but since then there had been no trace of it. Sixteen ’planes joined in the search.

Lady Young has rejoined her husband at Lusaka. When her machine overturned she and Dr. Kirby were both temporarily stunned. Later they struggled through the dense jungle and lion and mosquito infested country until they reached a locust ranger’s camp in an exhausted condition. They are now little the worse for their adventure.
