SCHOOL FUNDS BENEFIT
* • GALA DAY AT MANAIA. PUPILS MARCHING AND DRILL. ! Glorious sunshine, tempered by a light breeze, favoured the joint committee responsible for the gala day held at the Manaia Domain yesterday in aid of the funds of the primary and secondary departments of the Mania school. There was a good attendance of the public, for whose benefit an entertaining programme of marches and drills was provided by the children. Several stalls had been erected and these did brisk business throughout the afternoon. The school funds will benefit to a considerable extent. The Manaia municipal band "was in attendance and under Conductor J. A. G. Cosgrove an entertaining series of selections was presented. The school orchestra under Mrs Antoni Bonctti also provided several enjoyable numbers.
Probably the most outstanding event on the pupils’ drill and marching programmes, was the grand march in which nearly 300 children of both secondary and primary departments took part. The accompaniment was provided by the Manaia band. It was obvious that the children had been well trained and great credit was reflected on the work of the instructors, members of the staff—Messrs. E. M. Marshall, F. Garner and G. Clegg. The senior girls (secondary and standards 5 and 6 pupils) -were next seen in two folk dancing numbers, *‘Picking Up Paper” and “Reaping the Flax.” These numbers were in the hands of Misses P. D. Reekie, M. Chilcott and M. Wood. The infants under Miss K. O’Donnell presented two enjoyable folk dances and the concluding number on this section of the programme was a display of drill by the primary pupils. Miss P. York and Mr Garner were the instructors. Each of the foregoing numbers received wellearned applause. Afternoon tea rooms and a general produce stall w r ere in the hands of a committee of ladies, while Miss Chilcott was in charge of a hoop-la stall. Lady members of the staff conducted an ice cream and soft drinks booth. The joint committee responsible for the function w'ere members of the school committee, parents, the headmaster (Mr J. Browning) and members of his staff. Mr O. T. Parry (chairman of the school committee) was chairman and Mr E. M. Marshall was secretary. The committee wishes to thank members of the public who, by donations of produce, etc., assisted to make the gala day an outstanding success.
