Narrow Escape from Blazing Fruitshop TRAMWAYMEN GIVE ALARM PROMPT ACTION SAVES LIFE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, To-day. Dazed by smoke, a Chinese named Clung narrowly escaped with his life from a, bedroom over a blazing fruitshop in Ponsonby this morning.

The motorman and conductor of a passing tram noticed smoke coming from the shop. They stopped the tram and banged on the door to rouse the occupant. Ching was almost overcome by smoko, but groped his way downstairs and managed to open the door and fall into the street. He said he realised that his life had been saved by the prompt action of the tramwavmen.
