A GENEROUS GIFT.
'Lord Nuffield’s gift of £50,000 to New Zealand crippled children represents a generosity which is almost overwhelming to the people of this country, which is not blessed with a great number of millionaires of its own and has comparatively little experience of that individual generosity, which has been the backbone of social welfare work in England for generations. Lord Nuffield, still better known in this country as the William Morris who designed the Morris car, has been a great benefactor to his country. Through his engineering and commercial genius he has been a big factor in preserving a leading place for England in the race for supremacy in the world’s motor-car industry. His life story, which is summarised elsewhere in this issue, reads like a romance, but it has been the romance of personal endeavour and the devotion of a busy life to the ideal of industrial leadership. As he prospered Lord Nuffield was able to give free rein to another ideal which lies deep in the make-up of many men —that of making this world a pleasanter place for"the physically afflicted. To that end lie has given away sums said to aggregate £1,000,000. The assistance of crippled _ children has been one of his consistent objectives and New Zealand can count itself fortunate that the interests of this great English philanthropist are wide enough to embrace the sick and suffering of this small and distant part of the Empire.
