ELTHAM ACTIVITIES
LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Eltham Legion of Frontiersmen was held in the Legion rooms on Friday evening. Lieut. Carncross presided over a good attendance of members. A report on the year’s "working was presented by the troop leader, who complimented the troop on the successful year. In shooting the troop had ■won the Vickridge Cup for the fourth consecutive year. On the long range members had assisted materially in winning the Compton Memorial and D’Esterre Cups for the M. Squadron. Medal Shoots "were won by Troopers A. W. Packard, W. Mancer, C. A. Belcher, Corporal Gyde. Parades on Anzae Day at Hawera and Kaponga were well attended and the Armistice Day church parade was an outstanding success.
Public services rendered were in connection with the Eltham jubilee functions, charity ball and the visit of H.R.11. the Duke of Gloucester. and assistance to the Boy' Scouts. 'Trooper E. Butler was appointed to headquarters staff with the rank of ser-geant-major. At the annual conference held at Napier Q.M.S. Foord was the recipient of the pioneer’s axe, the highest recognition obtainable by .a member of the Legion. The financial statement showed a substantial credit balance. Lieut. Carncross was • roturned unopposed to the position of troop leader. Sergeant McGarrigle and Cirporal Gay r were re-appointed to their respective positions. Mr N. H. Murray was re-appointed auditor.
CHILDREN’S SPORTS. The postponed sports meeting of the Eltahm jubilee committee is to be held in the Taumata Park on Saturday March 16. The day set aside for the children’s sports during the week of the Eltham jubilee on May last w T as too wc! to hold the meeting, which was postponed indefinitely until a more suitable date. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly' meeting of the Eltham public school committee was held in the school on Friday evening. The Rev. J. A. Byburn presided over the following members of the committee, Mrs Jones, Dr. Saunders, Messrs. A. C. Towers, 11. J. Mchrtens, F. Muggeridge, T. Glass; A. R. Gower, F. Lynch (secretary), and the headmaster (Mr R. E. Thomas). The headmaster repotted as follows:, The average attendance for the month of February was 321.24, boys 176, girls 143.04. The present roll number was 337 (boys IS7, girls 150). Since the beginning of the year 30 new' pupils were enrolled in the infant department. On February 27 Inspectors C. N. Haslam and J. A. Henry visited the school and on "February 14 the annual school excursion to New Plymouth was held. The school resumed full time attendance on February 18. The main school had leaked badly during the recent flood. The headmaster acknow- ( ledged a gift of 50 books from Mrs. Guy Cooper. - | The secretary reported that after pavment of all current accounts there remained a credit balance of £SO Ss Id. The Rev. J. A. Eyburn and Dr. Saunders were appointed a visiting j committee for the month. ;
