OPUNAKE TOWN BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING HELD. COMMISSIONER'S- RESIGNATION. (From Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Opunake Town Board was held on Thursday evening. Those pre-sest were: Commissioners A. J. Brennan (chairman), H. Booker, W. J. S. Dudley and Dr E. M. Grilfin. An apology for absence was received from Or. L. Des Forges.
The resignation of Or T. P. Hughson jun., as a Commissioner oil the board ivas received as he had left the board district.
The chairman, in moving that the resignation lie accepted, spoke of the Avork of Mr Hughson Avliilst a member of the board. He had ahvays been a keen member and had dealt Avit’h matters in a fair and just manner. The Opunake Returned Soldiers’ Association Avrote asking the board for permission to conduct the Anzac Day service on the afternoon of Anzac Day instead of in the morning as lyThe deputy-chairman and the clerk Avere left to make arrangements in conjunction Avith the Opunake clergy and the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
The foreman (Mr J. tie Castro) reported on the month’s activities. The roads had been patched where necessary, water channels cleaned, 140 square yards of footpath levelled, and coifixed in front of Richards and McKinley’s garage, the town hall cleaned several times and the rubbish collected. The foreman also reported that the following traffic had passed up and down the Beach Hoad on the following dates : February 3, a total of 665 vehicles; Saturday, February 9, in 61 hours, 394 vehicles; Sunday, February 10, during the holding of the Taranaki surf championships, in 81- hours, 1500 vehicles.
Members were unanimous that it was time the Beach Boad was tarsealed and it was decided to make application for its establishment as a secondary highway. The foreman was instructed to have repairs effected to the pound. 4l’he ranger reported that four head of- cattle had been impounded during the month.
The dog-tax collector reported that be would conclude dog-tax collecting on Saturday, March 2, when he would hand in names of owners of unregistered dogs. The question of disposing of such dogs was held over until next meeting.
The clerk was instructed to prepare a declaration . form for ownership of registered cattle and present same to the next meeting for approval. Members were of the opinion that there were too many people running more tliijn.- the specified njiimber of cows per household. DOMAIN BOARD. The Opunake Rugby Football Club requested permission to use the foothall ground for all competition .games held during the coming season.—lt was decided to ask the club for the dates on which they would require the ground. SURF CLUB DANCE. The surf club’s race night dance proved an outstanding success from all points of view. About 150 couples were present and a most enjoyable evening was spent in dancing to the music of J. Hooker's Merrymakers Orchestra. Mr C. Maindonald was M.C. and the supper arrangements werp in the hands of Mesdames E’. Jenkin, C. Maindonald, T. N. Watt and R. McCullum. As a result of the dance the club will benefit to the exteht of about £l2.
